In anticipation of tonight’s North American premier of the third series of Sherlock, take a look at this PBS documentary that aired in late December of last year: Unlocking Sherlock. Focusing on BBC’s Sherlock and how co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss brought the great sleuth into the twenty-first century, it also offers a glimpse into the different incarnations of Sherlock Holmes on film over the years, with an emphasis on Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett. It also explores the different inspirations for Sherlock, whether from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original stories or different films, and how they were modernized and alluded to, as well as being paid homage to, such as Moriarty’s entrance and visit to Sherlock’s flat in The Reichenbach Fall in Series Two.
Mark Gatiss also does wonderful readings of the Holmes stories and now I want to hear all of them read by him!
It is my hope that Unlocking Sherlock is released one day for purchase, as part of Series Three or separately.
